Seymour man stabbed in Thursday morning attack

A Seymour man was stabbed during a Thursday morning incident.

“The Seymour Tribune” is reporting that two men showed up at the victim’s home in the 1400 block of Hillcrest Drive, demanding money they said he owed. Acting Police Chief Craig Hayes told the newspaper that dispatchers received a call at 3:45 a.m. reporting the incident.

Police say that 40-year-old Joseph Sizemore had been stabbed in the right leg and abdomen.

Police are attempting to locate the two men involved, whom Sizemore said he did not recognize.

US 31 bridge projects in Jackson County to finish work ahead of schedule

Two bridge projects that began in late July on U.S. 31 between Crothersville and Uniontown in Jackson County are expected to be completed ahead of schedule. The Indiana Department of Transportation says that U.S. 31 closed over Grassy Creek for a $870,000 bridge replacement project. A temporary traffic signal has been in place at Blau Ditch for an $890,000 bridge deck overlay.

The bridge over Grassy Creek was expected to reopen by Nov. 29, but will reopen Friday, Oct. 25 by noon with temporary pavement markings. Flaggers will be on hand into November to apply permanent markings.

The temporary signal will remain in place at Blau Ditch through Nov. 5, weather permitting. Crews from E&B Paving Inc. are currently installing guardrail and paving the bridge, which was expected to reopen by Nov. 11.

Turning Point moving Fall Fun Fest to Sunday

This weekend’s Turning Point Fall Fun Fest at the Clover Center has been rescheduled.

Originally set for Saturday, it will now be held on Sunday due to weather concerns.

The Fall Fun Fest will be from 2 to 5 p.m.  Sunday at the center at 3007 25th street. It will feature a trunk-or-treat, corn hole and other games, face painting, free child ID kits along with grilled hot dogs and cookies.

Seymour man arrested on child pornography charges

An 18-year-old Seymour man is facing child pornography charges after an investigation by the Indiana State Police Crimes Against Children and Cyber Crimes unit.

Troopers say that police received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. That led to two search warrants being served yesterday at homes on South Pine Street and Jackson County Road 525 East.

A resident of both homes, 18-year-old Dylan J. Hatfield was arrested on 10 counts of possession of child pornography and taken to the Jackson County Jail.

Bartholomew Consolidated teachers recognized for innovation

Innovative Bartholomew Consolidated School teachers were awarded more than $21,000 in grants this week as part of the fall grant cycle for the annual Innovation Awards from the school foundation.

Superintendent Dr. Jim Roberts said that 65 teachers applied for the grant money. That is a record number and more than twice as many have every applied before.

The school district has been giving innovation awards for 63 years. The foundation gave away $50 thousand dollars in innovation grants this year.

At this week’s school board meeting, 14 grants were awarded ranging from $2,500 to $275 for a variety of projects:

City Council candidates to take part in forum at Mill Race Center

The Mill Race Center is holding a candidate forum for Columbus City Council candidates Thursday night at the center on Lindsey Street. Dan Mustard is executive director of Mill Race Center.

There’s still no word on how many candidates will be attending, but Mustard says both Republicans and Democrats will be represented.

Thursday’s candidate forum begins at 7 p.m. and is expected to last about two hours.

Four people arrested after traffic stop in North Vernon

Four people, including three Columbus residents, were arrested after a traffic stop Tuesday night in North Vernon.

North Vernon Police say that an officer stopped a vehicle in the 2600 block of N SR 7 at about 9:30 p.m. They arrested 27-year-old Emily Clarence, 24-year-old Tyler J. Shrum and 27-year-old Daniel Runge, all of Columbus, as well as 23-year-old Triston Barlow, of Elizabethtown, on preliminary charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Paraphernalia and Visiting a Common Nuisance.

New Columbus Firefighter sworn-in, joins father on the department

The Columbus Fire Department has announced another father-son pairing after the hiring of Jordan Maley to the position of Firefighter. Maley was sworn in by Mayor Jim Lienhoop at Wednesday’s Board of Public Works and Safety meeting at city hall.

Maley is a 31-year-old Columbus resident and a 2007 graduate of Columbus East High School. He attended Murray State University where he earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Advertising & Real Estate, and was a member of the Murray State Racers football team. Maley is a member of the Columbus East football coaching staff.

Maley and his wife, Andrea, have a four month old son, Dawson. Jordan Maley is the son of Scott and Janet Maley of Columbus. Scott Maley is a 25 year veteran and Lieutenant actively serving the Columbus Fire Department.

Jordan Maley is an Indiana certified emergency medical technician. Jordan will undergo a fire department training program before he receives a shift and station assignment.

Capt. Mike Wilson, CFD spokesman, says the department currently has five father-son pairs actively serving.

One person hurt in chain-reaction crash

A four vehicle crash Tuesday in Bartholomew County sent one person to the hospital.

The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department says that at approximately 8:37 a.m., deputies responded to N US 31/E 150 S in reference to a traffic accident with injury. Investigators determined that 20-year-old Kyle Peele, of Westport, was traveling north on US 31 in his pickup when he failed to stop behind stopped traffic due to construction at US 31/E 100 S.

Police say Peele struck 37-year-old Patricia Stacy, of North Vernon, in the rear of her SUV causing her to hit 64-year-old Terry Biehle, of North Vernon, in the rear of her SUV. Biehle then struck the rear of a car driven by 44-year-old Ernesto De La Cruz-Comacho, of North Vernon.

Stacy was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The other three drivers were not hurt.

The accident remains under investigation.

Illinois man arrested after nearly crashing into deputy

An Illinois man is behind bars after nearly crashing into a local deputy.

The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department says that on Tuesday, Oct. 22, at about 3 p.m., off-duty Deputy Brandon Sellers was traveling southbound on I-65, near the 76-mile-marker, when a vehicle came into his lane and just missed hitting his patrol car. Sellers initiated a traffic stop at the southbound rest park on southbound I-65.

While speaking with the driver, 37-year-old Daniel Malnar, of St. Charles, IL, Deputy Matt Bush arrived on the scene with his police dog Diesel. The K-9 alerted to narcotics inside Malnar’s vehicle. A search allegedly uncovered syringes, a spoon and several pills.

Malnar was arrested on a preliminary charge of Possession of Legend Drug Injection Device.

He remains in the Bartholomew County Jail on $57,500 bond.
