Holiday traditions on display at Historical Society

The Bartholomew County Historical Society has a new holiday display at their downtown history center showing off the Christmas traditions of the early 20th century – including doll houses, Christmas cards and nativity scenes from the collection of Xenia Miller.

The Bartholomew County History Center is at 524 Third Street and is open to the public Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Anti-drug group to outline upcoming plans

The Bartholomew County Council will be holding their monthly meeting early tomorrow night so they can hear an update on the local drug epidemic and a treatment option.

The Council normally meets at 6 p.m. in the evening but is moving the meeting to 5 p.m. in part because they have a lot of material to cover for their last meeting of the year, but that to include time for a presentation by the Alliance for Substance Abuse Progress in Bartholomew County. The group is expected to make a presentation on a public funding model on governance for when ASAP makes later program recommendations.

North Vernon man arrested on drunk-driving charge

A North Vernon man was arrested Friday night on a drunk-driving charge. The North Vernon Police Department says that at 7:42 p.m., officers responded to a report of crash with property damage crash in the 400 block of Hayden Pike. Authorities say the driver, 71-year-old Danny Brumfield, drove off of the road, through a ditch alongside the road, and into a back yard. He then allegedly tried to leave the scene and backed into the ditch, where the vehicle became stuck.

The NVPD says that Brumfield providing a certified breath sample of .212, more than two-and-a-half times the legal limit. He was arrested on a preliminary charge of Operating a Motor Vehicle With a Blood-Alcohol Content of .15 or Greater. Brumfield was also cited for Use of Telecommunication Device While Operating a Motor Vehicle.

No injuries were reported.

Three arrested in Country Squire Lakes on drug charges

Three people were arrested Thursday on drug charges after police executed a search warrant at a home in Country Squire Lakes. Lt. Mike Mowery with the Jennings County Sheriff Department says that at approximately 11:30 a.m., deputies assisted Indiana State Parole with the search at a home in the 2200 block of Avonshire Court.

During the search, deputies and parole agents reportedly found methamphetamine, syringes, marijuana, Pills and paraphernalia.

Authorities arrested Charles Williams, Christina Rodgers and Natasha Mosier on preliminary charges of:

  • Dealing in Meth – Level 2 Felony
  • Dealing Controlled Substance – Level 2 Felony
  • Possession of Meth – Level 6 Felony
  • Possession of Controlled Substance – Level 6 Felony
  • Possession of Paraphernalia – Level 6 Felony
  • Possession of Marijuana – Class A Misdemeanor

Rodgers was also charged with Possession of Syringe – Level 6 Felony

Police say that Williams’ bond is doubled to $20,055 because he was already out on bond from a previous arrest. Rodgers’ and Mosier’s bonds were set at $1,055

Rhodes, Hasler chosen for Lilly Endowment scholarships

Heritage Fund — The Community Foundation of Bartholomew County has announced the winners of this year’s Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships.

Columbus East High School’s Madelyn Rhodes and Hauser Junior-Senior High School senior Grace Hasler were chosen out of 86 applicants for the two scholarships.

Rhodes is the daughter of Michelle Templin and Hasler is the daughter of Michael and Dena Hasler.

The scholarships covers full tuition for four years to the Indiana college of the student’s choice as well as a $900 stipend for required books and equipment.

Rhodes plans to study human biology.while Hasler plans to study agricultural sales and marketing/agricultural education.

Other finalists for the scholarships were:

  • David Phan, Natalie Glaid and Reagan Perkins from Columbus East High School
  • Blake Shaffer from Columbus North High School
  • Alyssa Knight from Columbus Signature Academy – New Tech
  • Sydney Schoen and Sarah Tedder from Hauser High School

Driver arrested after refusing to pull over for deputies

Jennings County authorities say they arrested a driver who refused to pull over for police. And he allegedly told officers he didn’t think he had to stop.

The incident happened at about 4:40 a.m.  in the morning on Wednesday when a deputy tried to stop the vehicle near State Road 750 and U.S. 50 for a traffic violation, but instead, the driver continued driving. Eventually the driver, Jean B. Oriol of Houston, Texas, stopped in Jackson County at Mutton Creek. Oriol allegedly told police that he didn’t think he had to stop, if he didn’t want to.

Oriol is facing a charge of resisting law enforcement by fleeing.

Three arrested on West Tellman Road

Three people were arrested Wednesday night after a passerby spotted a suspicious vehicle in the 1800 block of West Tellman Road in Columbus. Judy Jackson, spokeswoman for the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department, says that at about 7:24 p.m., Deputy Matt Bush was dispatched to the scene where he found a car sitting in the roadway in front of a house. The vehicle had its flashers on and was occupied by 32-year-old Kelly Parker, of Columbus. Parker allegedly told the deputy that her vehicle had run out of gas and that she was alone.

Deputy Bush then reported noticing that the front door on the home was broken and open. When he called inside, 31-year-old Garry Robinson, of Elizabethtown, reportedly came out with a can of butane in his hand. Robinson allegedly told the deputy that he was with Parker.

Authorities say that Robinson told him that he didn’t know if anyone else was inside the home. However, during a search, Deputy Bush found 37-year-old Rachel Robinson, of Scipio, IN, hiding behind a door.

Authorities say that several items from the residence were found in the possession of both Garry Robinson and Rachel Robinson. They add that K9 Diesel arrived on the scene and alerted to the vehicle where a glass pipe, commonly used to smoke methamphetamine, was found. In addition, police say that Rachel Robinson was in possession of marijuana, hydrocodone and drug-related paraphernalia.

Possession of Marijuana,
Possession of a Controlled Substance,
Residential Entry,
Theft,
Criminal Trespass,
Burglary

She is being held on $43,400 bond.

Garry Robinson was arrested on preliminary charges of Burglary,
Theft and Criminal Trespass.

He is being held on $32,500 bond.

Kelly Parker was arrested on a preliminary charge of Possession of Paraphernalia and remains behind bars on $2,500 bond.

Sheriff Matt Myers says this incident shows the importance of community members looking out for one another. “This is another incident where the public saw something that looked suspicious and called,” said Myers. He went on to say: “If you see something, call.”

Attempted catalytic converter theft leads to arrest

Columbus police arrested a man last night who was allegedly trying to steal a catalytic converter off of a vehicle on North National Road .

A witness reported to police that they saw a man lying on the ground next to a vehicle in the parking lot in the 3600 block of North National Road at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. When the vehicle’s owner confronted the suspect, he ran away, leaving behind the auto exhaust part, which was left dangling underneath the vehicle.

Police arrested 22 year old Trey A. Smith of Columbus a short while later near National Road and Washington Street. He was already wanted on three local warrants and is now facing a new charge of attempted theft of motor vehicle parts.

Two arrested in metal thefts from Bartholomew farm

The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department arrested two people yesterday morning accused of stealing metal items from a farm.

A witness called in the report of two men stealing from the farm on County Road 650N and provided police with a good description of the suspects’ vehicle.

Deputies found the vehicle, which had broken down on Stone Court. The suspects had run away, but were soon located behind the Red Roof Inn on U.S. 31.

40 year old George J. Reese and 24-year-old Adam N. Gaskins, both from the Taylorville area, are facing preliminary charges of theft and receiving stolen property.

Public invited to plan Anderson Falls park future

You have a chance today to weigh in on what should happen with Anderson Falls, a park on the eastern side of Bartholomew County near Hartsville. That will be at an open house this afternoon.

Kris Medic with the Purdue Extension office in Bartholomew County says that the planning for the park’s future falls under a Purdue Extension Program called Enhancing the Value of Public Spaces.

Medic says that the process has included workshops and surveys to gather public input.

The suggested goals will be passed to the County Parks Board for consideration.

The park along Clifty Creek includes the waterfalls and a 44-acre state nature preserve. The beautiful natural area been hit hard in recent years, Medic said.

She said it is an outstanding natural feature in the county.

The open house will be from 3 to 4 p.m. today at the County Commissioners Chambers in the Governmental Office Building in downtown Columbus. That is at 440 Third Street.
