Sheriff urges caution in jail crosswalk

Bartholomew County Sheriff Matt Myers is warning people to stop for pedestrians in front of the county jail.

The sheriff took to Facebook yesterday to call for drivers to slow down and to pay attention to people in the well-marked crosswalk across Second Street between the jail and its parking lot. The sheriff says that families, attorneys, ministers, jail staff and deputies frequently use that crossing and the county has recently upgraded the crosswalk there to raise more attention to the walkway. That was at a cost of more than $12,000, the sheriff posted.

He said that installing flashing lights at the intersection would help alert drivers but because the street is part of State Road 46, it would require state involvement and so far INDOT says the expense would be more costly than the benefit.
