A Columbus police officer was injured last night after a fight with a man wanted on several warrants.

The officer recognized 34-year-old Jacob D. Rice of Columbus who was near 25th Street and Hawcreek Avenue at about 7:15 p.m. Monday as a person who was wanted on several warrants. But when the officer tried to take Rice into custody he allegedly first tried to run away, was hit with a Taser, then got up and fought with the officer, says Lt. Matt Harris, spokesman for the Columbus police.

The officer was punched in the face several times and Rice pulled the officer’s radio off of his uniform. Other officers arrived and used a Taser on Rice a second time before he could be subdued.

Rice was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital to be checked out, then taken to the Bartholomew County Jail. In addition to the warrants, he is also facing preliminary charges of battery on a police officer and resisting law enforcement.

The officer was treated at the hospital for a cut to his face.
