People Trail closure extended for bridge installation

Columbus Parks and Recreation says that an additional portion of the People Trail System around Haw Creek will be closing to allow the installation of the former Newbern Bridge near Lincoln Park.

When the work is finished, a historic truss bridge that used to span Clifty Creek at Newbern will have a new home in Columbus.

The county highway department had to preserve the historic bridge in order to build a new one and the city agreed to take over the old structure. The bridge will allow the People Trail to cross Haw Creek east of Hamilton Ice Arena and then loop under the 25th Street bridge, connecting with the northeastern portion of the trail.

The parks department closed the People Trail from 19th to 25th streets last month. They are announcing that clossure will now extend from 30th Street to 25th Street also.

The bridge installation is expected to take about four months.
